CARPET
Making Success at the MSC-APICTA Awards 2004
C.A.R.P.E.T Concept:
CARPET is an image processing technology that is used to
identify vehicles by their license plates. CARPET works by extracting the
characters and numbers from an image. This technology can be used in many
application areas such as toll booths, parking decks, border control, law
enforcement et. al. The system provides an automated way to streamline the
detection and identification of license plates thus saving both time and money.
This has tremendous benefits to application users such as parking lot operators,
highway operators, traffic police officers et. al.
"In
one month of implementing an automatic number plate recognition system in
UK, 480 arrests have been made, 59 stolen vehicles have been tracked down
and over £400,000 worth of stolen goods and drugs have been
recovered."

Management Team:
We are a group of professional technologist specialising in the
areas of research & development, image processing, artificial intelligence,
neural networks, genetic algorithms and commercial application development. Over
the years, our experience in the industry has helped us establish strong
credentials in these areas and has led to the development of a powerful range of
products.
In
the above example: Vehicle approaches the camera,
the C.A.R.P.E.T unit automatically "reads"
the license plate registration number and it is compared to a
predefined list and allow the access if it is a valid license plate registration number.
Application Areas:
• Car Parks
Current car parks use tickets and auto-pay systems that require
human intervention and manual processes. CARPET automates this whole process.
CARPET adds the ability to track the vehicles that go in and out of the car park
and calculate the fare based on entry and exit times automatically.
• Access Control
CARPET is also used to control access into buildings that only
allow admission for certain vehicles. The access control will be done through
identifying the license plate number of vehicles.
• Toll Booths
Toll booths are often congested due to the manual processes.
There are other options available such as smart cards that are being used but
having an extra device is a hassle. CARPET automates this process and makes it
more transparent.
• Stolen Cars & Law Enforcement
CARPET can take advantage of the cameras that are being
installed in the cities to help the police to track down stolen cars and
offenders. The database of images kept in the system can be used to help improve
and accelerate the enforcement of the law.
